Buying our house
This is our story of looking at houses for sale and finding out house ...
Dennis and I were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary in Palm Springs, CA. I had lost my job a couple of months earlier and Dennis' work was really slow. We decided to extend our 5 day vacation to a little longer so that we could enjoy the warm weather and spending time with each other. While we were in Palm Springs, my friend posted to my facebook page asking when we were going to come back to our awesome weather (it was snowing in Oregon at that time). I responded and told her that we weren't, that we were looking for jobs and houses in Palm Springs. Of course, I was joking - although whenever we do travel, I do look at the real estate and job possibilities.
Our cousins's dad happened to see this friendly, joking exchange on facebook and told our cousin, who we were renting their house, that we were looking into moving. So, we received an email from our cousin letting us know that they were thinking of selling their house soon. Dennis thought this meant that we needed to start looking into buying a house right now. I was hesitant since I wasn't working and didn't want to overextend ourselves financially. The timeline of finding our house is pretty incredible ...
It was on a Friday that we made an appointment with a loan officer at our bank. We asked him if we could purchase our cousins home and there were certain legal reasons why we could not. Upon receiving that news, I especially felt like we needed to rent an apartment again until I found a job and we could afford to purchase a house. Well, the loan officer gave us the phone number of a real estate agent that he liked to work with.
On Tuesday of the next week, the real estate agent called us asking us if we would like to meet with her. Dennis' work was still slow, so we were both home at the time. We ended up meeting with her that afternoon. Originally, we were pre-approved for twice as much house as we wanted to buy. When we told her our wishes in a house and price she was skeptical that we would find something.
Wednesday - the next day - we were emailed a listing of a house in the next town from us. We got ready and drove by the house. There was access into the back yard so we walked all the way around the house and saw this house had exactly what we were looking for. We called our realtor and she met us at the house about 45 minutes later. We fell in love with the house when we walked through it .. Although it was pretty nasty - there were places the carpet was matted down from pet messes. As we were leaving the house, another gentleman and realtor were standing on the porch of the house to walk through it. Our realtor took us through 2 other houses for sale that day and Dennis was busy on his phone filling out the application form of the selling bank.
Thursday morning - we made an offer on the house - and we offered more than asking price because we were told there were several offers on the house. We wanted to make sure we got the house. We were told we would hear back in about a week ...
Friday - we received an email saying that the house was ours!!!
Then the doubts started in for me ... was the master bath big enough, what about the master bedroom. One bedroom and bathroom were midnight blue color and the laundry closet was black. And, what about the animal messes. And - the kitchen seemed pretty small ... buyers remorse.
We ended up taking my parents through the house that weekend and were really excited to finally own a home of our own.
